Our story

Olá, I’m Oyi.

Arroz is Portuguese for rice: a nod to the country I now call home.

Born from my Nigerian roots, my love for Asian cuisine, and my journey of discovery here in Portugal, Arroz Box is where familiar ingredients meet unexpected flavours.

What started as experimenting with herbs, spices, and local ingredients in my own kitchen grew into a passion for creating original rice dishes that I’m excited to share with you.

Every box is an invitation to explore something different, discover just how versatile rice can be, and find a new favourite along the way.

My journey from Nigeria to Malta and eventually Portugal introduced me to new cultures, ingredients, and culinary possibilities. But it also came with a familiar challenge: finding the exact herbs, spices, and blends I had grown accustomed to back home. So, I did what any curious food lover would do. I started experimenting.

Over the years, my kitchen became a place of discovery. I explored local ingredients, found creative alternatives to familiar spices, and experimented with flavours, techniques, and combinations until I developed recipes that I loved sharing with my family. What began as a personal journey of adapting to new surroundings grew into something much bigger: a passion for creating original rice dishes that bring together my African heritage, my love for Asian cuisine, and the ingredients and inspiration I’ve found here in Portugal.

I chose Arroz, the Portuguese word for rice, as a nod to the country I now call home and the place where this culinary adventure continues to grow. Portugal has given me the space to explore, create, and see familiar ingredients in new ways. It felt only right for that inspiration to be reflected in the name.

But Arroz Box is about more than rice. It’s about discovering just how versatile, exciting, and full of possibility one ingredient can be. Every dish is an opportunity to explore a new flavour, experience an unexpected combination, or fall in love with a familiar favourite all over again.

My hope is that every box you open brings you something memorable: food that surprises you, flavours that keep you coming back, and stories that make each dish feel a little more personal.

Made with curiosity, inspired by my journey, and served with love. — Oyi

A story in every box

Some recipes begin with a memory.

Others begin with a spice, an ingredient, or a little kitchen curiosity. Every Arroz Box comes with a card telling you how your dish came to be, in Oyi’s own words.

The first cards are being written now.

Questions

Before we open

When are you opening?

Soon. We’re finishing the launch menu and getting the kitchen ready. Everyone on the waitlist hears the opening date first.

Where will you deliver?

We’re starting in Braga, and we’ll share exactly which parts of the city we deliver to at launch. If you live outside Braga, you’re welcome to join the waitlist, but at launch we’ll only be cooking for Braga.

What will be on the menu?

Original rice dishes Oyi has developed in her own kitchen. We’ll send the launch menu, with prices, ingredients and allergens, to the waitlist first.

Is it Nigerian food?

It’s rice cooked Oyi’s way: shaped by her Nigerian roots, inspired by Asian cuisine and made with ingredients from Portugal. You don’t need to know any of those cuisines to enjoy it.

Will you list allergens?

Yes. Every dish on the menu will show its main ingredients and allergen information before you order.

What will you do with my email?
